Thin-film solar panels are a type of photovoltaic (PV) panel that is made by depositing a thin layer of photovoltaic material, such as amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride (CdTe), or copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), onto a substrate, such as glass, metal, or plastic.

What is a thin-film module?

This technology is highly flexible, durable, lightweight, and has excellent indoor and low-light performance. Thin-film modules are made by depositing a-Si onto a flexible polyimide substrate using proprietary roll to roll vacuum deposition and monolithic interconnect systems.

The substrate is as thin as 1mil (0.025mm) thick. Amorphous silicon is the absorber layer in the solar panels.
